Job title: Audit Manager

Office: Dublin

Joining date: 2013

Summary of role

I work as part of the audit team at RSM providing audit services to a wide range of clients operating in a variety of industries including manufacturing, technology, not for profit, financial services and IT services. As a manager, my role also involves providing technical and career support to more junior members of the audit team as part of their training and career progression in RSM.

What’s been the highlight so far?

My secondment to the RSM Office in Chicago is definitely my highlight so far. During my training contract I was involved in the audit of one of our financial services clients and became more interested in this sector. An opportunity arose at the end of my training contract to apply for the international secondment programme and thankfully I got accepted!

This was a brilliant experience both professionally as I got the chance to work with specialists in this field and improve my knowledge in this sector but also personally as I got the opportunity to meet new people across the Global RSM Network.

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

Becoming a manager was quite daunting, especially with more responsibility associated with this position. But the audit team is extremely welcoming and supportive, so I settled in very quickly and I am enjoying the new challenges I am faced with.

What’s surprised you most about working at RSM?

How social RSM is! When starting my training contract, I had the stereotypical expectation of what an accountancy firm is but from day one everyone at the firm was very friendly and welcoming. There is plenty of social events through the year including RSM World Day, the Peter McVerry Cycle to Wexford and the annual Christmas party.

Our Social and sports committee also run various sports events throughout the year including our tag rugby and the annual RSM Football Tournament which is an event not to be missed for the lucky few who make it through the selection process!

What’s next for you at RSM?

In my role I am constantly learning and each day brings a new challenge, especially more recently with the change to remote working. RSM have therefore heavily invested in our IT infrastructure, enabling easy sharing of resources and collaboration between our teams, now that the majority of the firm are working remotely. I will be working alongside other departments in our firm to identify what works best so we can continue to improve our efficiencies going forward.

What’s your top tip for someone looking to apply to RSM?

At RSM qualifications and experience are important during factors during the interview process but our focus is on “people” and what you can bring to RSM. We are looking for applicants who not only want to develop themselves within the firm but individuals who give the job their all and enjoy the “opportunities” which present themselves along the way.

Most importantly during the interview process, always remember to take a deep breath and be yourself!
