As information-storage and communications technologies develop at an astonishing rate, forensic technology must stay abreast – even ahead – of the pace of change. We put our understanding of the rules of evidence and our technological expertise to work for you.

All disputes and investigations rely on the production of forensically sound evidence to support legal action.

Communications are ever-reliant on information that is communicated and stored electronically. This not only includes personal computers and laptops, but also PDAs, mobile phones and an array of mobile storage media.

Forensic technology is similarly ever-changing and developing, in order to keep pace with the explosion in the use of communication software alongside the increasing sophistication of fraudsters erasing evidence trails.

At RSM, we pride ourselves in being able to effectively capture, sort, analyse and produce evidence for our clients. We are capable of capturing information in a variety of different formats, from the full range of electronic media and platforms to bespoke operating systems, exotic IT platforms and hardcopy.

We also provide e-discovery services for the production of legal disclosure and data hosting.

Our forensic technology experts have an implicit understanding of the rules of evidence in both criminal and civil matters, and we can also act as expert witnesses in court.

Case studies

Cyber fraud investigation case

RSM Ireland was engaged by a construction sector client to undertake a forensic investigation into the circumstances pertaining to a fraud. Our client was the victim of an international cyber (man in the middle) attack that saw considerable funds withdrawn without authorisation. Our team conducted a rigorous investigation and brought forward a report that examined the circumstances of the fraud, the key findings arising and related recommendations with regard to mitigating the likelihood of similar attacks via enhanced user awareness and IT security.

ICT project review for an international NGO

RSM Ireland was engaged by a leading NGO to undertake a technical and operational review of an underperforming multi-million-euro project seeking to deliver a centralised ICT platform in response to a prior information security and threat analysis report undertaken by a third party.

Our review featured a considered analysis of the current security and threat assessment in light of generally accepted best practice. In completing the review, RSM considered the current and future activities of the organisation, its strategy, global profile, the scale of its operations and the diverse location of its interventions.

The final deliverable was a concise presentation to the organisation’s leadership of our key review findings, the practical and relevant options available to the organisation and our recommendations regarding the future governance and provision of relevant ICT services within the organisation.

Discovery project

RSM Ireland was retained to discover all relevant data as stored on our client’s network or specific devices in a scenario where it was believed an employee was engaged in activity contrary to the interests of the business. Based on agreed criteria, the investigation team successfully located, secured and compiled circa 30.000 relevant files/email threads for the client to review.
