Tax Season turns dangerous: Microsoft warns of large-scale phishing and malware campaigns
Microsoft Threat Intelligence has uncovered multiple large-scale phishing and malware campaigns exploiting tax season themes to target organizations and individuals. In one major incident, over 29,000 users across 10,000 organizations were targeted, primarily in the United States. Attackers used tax-related lures such as IRS notices, refund alerts, and financial documents to create urgency and trick victims into clicking malicious links or opening infected attachments. Key techniques include phishing-as-a-service kits, QR code-based attacks, and abuse of legitimate remote management tools to steal credentials or deploy malware. These campaigns increase the risk of identity theft, financial fraud, and enterprise breaches, highlighting the need for stronger security awareness and defenses during high-risk seasonal periods.

Poisoned Typeface attack exposes critical blind spot in AI assistants
LayerX Security has uncovered a novel “Poisoned Typeface” attack that exploits a fundamental gap between what AI assistants read in HTML and what users actually see in the browser. By using custom fonts and simple CSS techniques, attackers can disguise malicious instructions so they appear harmless to AI systems while remaining visible to users. Key findings show that major AI tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, fail to detect these hidden threats, as they interpret encoded or obfuscated text incorrectly. This creates a dangerous scenario where AI may falsely classify malicious content as safe. Such attacks can enable social engineering, command execution, and data theft, highlighting urgent security challenges for AI-integrated browsers.
