The US has a total trade of US$ 7,301 billion in 2024 comprising of imports into US of US$ 4,110 billion and exports from US of US$ 3,192 billion resulting in a trade deficit of US$ 918 billion. US is the largest importing country in the world. On 2 April 2025, US announced a complete shift in its Tariff policy from a very low Tariff regime (average 2.5%) to a baseline tariff of 10% for all countries and all commodities (subject to certain exemptions) and Tariffs ranging from 10% to 245%. Several Asian Corporates particularly from India, China and Japan have grown significantly based on their exports to the US. In case the tariffs continue to be at higher levels post pause ending on 31 July 2025, this will certainly impact the revenues, profitability, competitiveness and indeed even survival of several Asian corporates. Hence, the topic should be relevant to most corporates having exports to or imports from US.
