Shadow AI, the hidden risk lurking in everyday tools

Organizations are now facing a new frontier in security: Shadow AI, the unapproved, informal adoption of AI-powered tools and features within SaaS apps. According to experts, employees are increasingly turning to internal AI chatbots, code assistants, and embedded generative features without IT oversight, leaving critical data at risk. Experts highlight that AI tools often have broader data access than traditional apps, so when breaches happen, the fallout can be significantly more severe. To combat the problem, security leaders recommend a comprehensive strategy: discover all AI usage (including browser plugins and embedded copilots), implement AI-aware security tools, and establish clear policies and approved tool sets to guide safe innovation.

Odyssey Stealer: a new name for a dangerous Mac malware

Cybersecurity firm Cyfirma has uncovered Odyssey Stealer, a rebranded version of the earlier Poseidon malware targeting Mac users. Disguised as helpful apps or system tools on fake websites, it tricks users into running a hidden command that silently installs spyware. Once inside, it steals sensitive data like saved passwords, crypto wallet info, browser history, and even private files, then sends everything back to the attacker’s servers. The malware hides its stolen files in a temporary folder and is part of a growing malware-for-hire market. Experts warn users to avoid unknown downloads, be cautious with pop-ups, and block script tools like “osascript” to stay safe.

AT&T debuts “Wireless Account Lock” to fight SIM swap scams

AT&T has launched a new free security feature, Wireless Account Lock, accessible via the myAT&T app. Once enabled, it blocks unauthorized account actions including SIM or eSIM swaps, phone number transfers, device upgrades, billing updates, and changes to authorized users or plans. This proactive layer prevents attackers from hijacking phone numbers to intercept two-factor codes and commit fraud. Both postpaid and prepaid consumer accounts and even business plans can use the toggle, with instant alerts sent via email and SMS when settings change. For business users, a similar protection called Business Account Lock can be activated by administrators to secure company wireless accounts.
