True One-Stop Service For Business In Japan

When you apply for a "Status of Residence" (visa) extension or change at the last minute, your original expiration date may pass while your application is still under review.

In this situation, the law grants a "Special Grace Period" (Tokurei Kikan), allowing you to reside legally in Japan for up to two additional months. However, while your stay is legal, your daily essentials, specifically your bank account and My Number Card, can face unexpected suspensions if not managed proactively. This article explains the necessary steps to take before your official expiration date hits.

1. Understanding the "Special Grace Period"

Under Article 20, Paragraph 6 of the Immigration Control Act, if you submit your renewal application before your visa expires, you can legally remain in Japan under your previous status until a decision is made or for up to two months after the original expiry date.

Your Residence Card will remain valid during this time, evidenced by the "Application Pending" (Shinsei-chu) stamp on the back. However, while the Immigration Bureau recognizes your status, private banks and local municipal systems often do not "sync" automatically, leading to service interruptions.

2. Bank Accounts: Risks and Procedures

With the 2026 strengthening of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) regulations, Japanese financial institutions have become extremely strict regarding the expiration of Residence Cards.

The Risk of Account Freezing
Many banks now automatically restrict or freeze accounts (disabling ATMs, online transfers, and automatic bill payments) the moment a registered residence period expires. In early 2026, major banks began implementing more aggressive automated "temporary blocks" for non-responsive users.

Procedures to Follow
* Notify the Bank Early: Do not wait for the freeze. Contact your bank before your original expiry date.

  • Submit Proof of Application: You must provide a copy or photo of the back of your Residence Card showing the "Application Pending" stamp.
  • New for 2026: Several major and regional banks (such as 77 Bank and others) have introduced Seven Bank ATM verification. As of February 2026, you can now update your residence info or notify the bank of a pending application by inserting your cash card and scanning your Residence Card at participating ATMs nationwide.

3. My Number Cards: Critical Expiry Rules

Unlike your residency status, the My Number Card does NOT have an automatic grace period. Its validity is strictly tied to the date printed on the front.

The Risk of Voidance
If your My Number Card expires even by one day, it becomes void (invalid). You cannot use it for health insurance (Myna-hoken), convenience store certificate printing, or e-Tax. Reissuing a voided card requires a fee (usually ¥1,000) and several weeks of waiting.

The "Two-Month Extension" Step
If you are in the grace period for your visa, you must visit your local municipal office before the card expires to request a "Special Extension." They will write a new date on the card, extending its validity for exactly two months to match the immigration grace period.

2026 Integration Update
Note that starting in June 2026, the government will begin rolling out the "Integrated Residence and My Number Card" (specified Residence Card). This new single-card system aims to eliminate these double-update hurdles, but until you hold this specific new card, you must continue to follow the manual extension process at City Hall.

4. Checklist: What You Need

When heading to the bank or City Hall during your grace period, bring the following:

  • Original Residence Card (with the "Application Pending" stamp on the back).
  • My Number Card.
  • Application Receipt (The paper slip or email confirmation from Immigration).

5. Summary

Securing your visa extension from Immigration is only half the battle. To maintain your daily life in Japan, remember:

Banks
Update your status via the bank's app or a Seven Bank ATM before the freeze.

My Number Card
Visit your local City Hall before the expiry date to get the two-month extension.

Failure to handle these "side" procedures can lead to your salary being locked or your digital ID being cancelled, causing significant stress during an already busy transition period.
