RSM Channel Islands 2026 work experience placements

This summer we welcomed Isabella, Fatima and Xavier who joined our 2026 work experience placement scheme.

Their week was spent with structured sessions hosted by our team introducing our service lines and culture, including a mock audit which involved them interviewing Leah Morgan who was role playing a particularly challenging client.

Isabella, Fatima and Xavier spent time with partners, managers and our team who shared their different perspectives and experience.  We spent time on everything from discussing RSM’s audit, accounting and taxation services, to looking at the compliance, cyber security, data protection and the ethical environment in which we work.

We had fun showcasing RSM, and at the end of the week we caught up with Fatima and Isabella to find out what they thought.

What attracted you to join RSM’s work placement?

Fatima: The Life in Finance event and my tutors encouraged me to explore finance industry opportunities through work placements, and I enjoyed meeting Leah and Liam at the meet and greet event.

Isabella: I met RSM at the Life in Finance meet and greet where I decided to speak with Leah and Liam, and out of all the firms I met RSM was the one I was most interested in.

Before starting the placement, what were you expecting the week to be like?

Fatima: I wasn’t sure what to expect because I had previously thought of finance as quite a dull office job, but I have learnt throughout the week just how much goes on behind the scenes.

Isabella: Because of my lack of knowledge of auditing and accounting I has assumed it would be quite dull and repetitive, but I actually found it engaging and rewarding.

Did anything surprise you about the experience?

Fatima: It was more relaxed and friendly than I expected.  For example, everyone was dressed smartly but casually and not all in suits.

Isabella: I was surprised by the amount of communication involved in auditing, and the need to speak not just with clients but also with numerous third parties and there’s a lot of communication between the audit team.

What area or session did you enjoy the most?

Fatima: The experience I enjoyed the most was learning how to do an audit, as it seemed confusing at first but with everyone’s help it started to fall into place and make sense.  The practical sessions were enjoyable.

Isabella: I enjoyed using Excel because these sessions were practical and put the discussions we had in other sessions in more perspective.

What is the most important take away you learned during the week?

Fatima: That when you are training not be worried about getting answers wrong and that the most important thing is to take part and communicate.

Isabella: I learnt that there is a substantial amount of thought and attention to the detail behind even the smallest aspect of auditing and how important communication is.

Are the roles you experienced this week something you would consider for the future?

Fatima: I would like to go to Uni and get a degree, and those plans haven’t changed, but the experience has definitely influenced my thoughts about career opportunities.

Isabella: Yes, the experience has given me an understanding of paths into careers other than getting a university degree.

How would you describe the people and culture at RSM?

Fatima: Everyone I met was really nice and friendly and welcoming and were easy to talk to.  They seemed to get on well, and there was a good atmosphere. 

Isabella: Very kind, friendly and welcoming environment.  It was a very positive experience.

What advice would you give to students considering a work experience placement with RSM?

Fatima: That even if they don’t know what they want to do for a career they should still apply and gain the experience which I found interesting, informative and rewarding and will help them think about their future plans.

Isabella: The experience is engaging and informative and will help people understand opportunities they might not know are available.

We enjoyed hosting Isabella, Fatima and Xavier and wish them all well with their remaining time in education and the very best for their future career choices.
