Summary of role

I work in the Portlaoise office of RSM which provides a variety of service offerings to our clients, primarily accounts preparation, audit, tax compliance and consulting. Working in this office exposes you to a variety of work, without being ‘pigeon-holed’ into any specific area, and while the saying may be cliché, it very much rings true, no two days are the same when working at RSM.

What’s been the highlight so far?

The highlight for me is definitely the variety of work and the flexibility of the firm. I trained as a Chartered Accountant within the Consulting Department in our head office in Dublin, where I got experience in liquidations, receiverships, bankruptcies and even managed to get two secondment opportunities within the banking sector which provided me with invaluable experience.

Upon completion of my training contract, an opportunity arose to relocate to our Portlaoise office, thereby eliminating my daily commute to the Capital, and giving me a greater work-life balance.

What’s been your biggest challenge so far?

My biggest challenge thus far has been moving office, working in an area which provided different services to the area where I trained. However, I settled in very quickly and the necessary supports were put in place, providing me with the confidence to manage a portfolio of varied clients in a relatively short timeframe.

What’s surprised you most about working at RSM?

I was most surprised at the flexibility of the firm, in terms of being able to get experience in other areas of the firm and indeed the secondment opportunities. This really puts you on a good footing in terms of career development and puts you in charge of the career path you wish to choose.

What’s next for you at RSM?

Our firm is after investing heavily in our IT infrastructure, enabling easy collaboration and sharing of resources between our three office locations. Now that this is in place, I will be working alongside other departments within our firm, obtaining exposure to clients operating in different sectors and industries.

What’s your top tip for someone looking to apply to RSM?

Apply! RSM are big enough to offer you all the experiences that one would expect from a large firm, but small enough to take a personal interest in each and every employee.
