Digital transformation is often portrayed as seamless, strategic, and linear. In reality, it is rarely straightforward, rarely perfect, and always human.
Over the past few years at RSM Malta, I’ve had the privilege of leading transformation initiatives. Along the way, I’ve learned that success isn’t only about tools or frameworks. It’s about clarity, communication, and empathy. Here are five lessons that can help others through transformation with foresight and resilience.
1. Planning and scoping are critical
Rushing into execution without robust planning often leads to scope creep and diluted outcomes. In one project, we aimed to streamline an HR process, but additional requests for dashboards and integrations mid-project extended timelines and shifted focus. The lesson is to define scope clearly, revisit it regularly, and prioritise core objectives.
2. Engage stakeholders from the start
People can make or break a transformation. Involving stakeholders early through workshops, co-design sessions, and regular check-ins ensures alignment and adoption. Transformation works best when it is done with people, not to them.
3. Governance provides momentum
Governance is not bureaucracy; it is the backbone of successful projects. Clear roles, responsibilities, and escalation paths prevent delays and confusion. Establishing transformation committees and setting Terms of Reference ensures decisions are timely and well-informed.
4. Empathy is strategic
Digital tools streamline processes, but empathy sustains change. Colleagues experience change differently. Some embrace it, others feel uncertainty. Listening, acknowledging concerns, and celebrating small wins build trust and long-term adoption.
5. Transformation is continuous
There is no finish line. Success reveals new challenges, behaviours, and opportunities. Embracing iteration by testing, learning, and adjusting turns setbacks into progress and keeps initiatives evolving.
