What did you do before coming to RSM Eastern Africa?
Before joining RSM, I worked as a Loan Consultant at a microfinance company. This earlier position closely aligned with my present responsibilities, involving thorough risk evaluations and due diligence processes that ignited my interest and laid a robust groundwork for my ongoing role in risk advisory.
What about this job and company appealed to you?
RSM felt like the right place to take my skills to the next level, and it has done just that for me. As a leading firm focused on the middle market, RSM offered the perfect environment to take my skills to the next level. This focus has offered me exposure to a diverse range of sectors and clients, allowing me to broaden my expertise in risk advisory.
How would you explain to your friends and family what working here is like?
I’d share with my friends and family that working at RSM is vibrant and collaborative. Even with tight deadlines, we exchange ideas, share laughs and continuously learn from one another. I’m constantly developing new skills and deepening my understanding of clients’ needs, which challenges me to grow every day! It has been amazing and fulfilling to see my growth and the growth of my colleagues over the years.
What RSM value resonates most with you and why?
Respect and integrity are equally important to me, they guide me on how to interact with my colleagues and clients alike with honesty and fairness given that my role is client facing, ensuring that every interaction builds lasting relationships and upholds the highest ethical standards. I have learnt over time that, in the serious world of audit, a bit of human connection, mutual respect and a positive attitude make all the difference.
What are you looking forward to doing in this role?
I’m particularly enthusiastic about innovations and changes, such as the Institute of Internal Auditors Kenya (IIA Kenya)’s push for strengthened risk management and potential mandatory internal audit requirements across sectors. I look forward to a time when risk advisory is fully integrated and adopted into the lifeline of businesses across the board.
Who are you outside RSM?
Outside of RSM, I find balance through my passions for fitness and fashion design. My fitness journey began with gym sessions and evolved into joining run clubs and eventually pilates (doesn't stop me from devouring a whole cake), which have not only built my fortitude but also connected me with a vibrant community, keeping me recharged for work. Over time I have realized that we are so privileged to have the ability to move and that should never be taken for granted.
Fashion design is my creative outlet. Though demanding schedules have put my sewing and pattern drafting on the back burner, when I do get time, I design and upcycle fabrics enabling me to unwind and express my individuality. This keeps me grounded and refreshed for the week ahead. When I get the chance, I also love to seek out new adventures, whether through new cuisines or new challenges.
What’s a surprising or little-known fact about you?
Fun fact that might surprise people is that in addition to my Economics and Statistics degree, I have a BTEC diploma in Fashion and Design. While it might seem unrelated to my professional work, it's where I developed my bold creative streak. It was an intensive, hands-on, one and a half year program that not only helped me hone valuable skills in innovation and creative thinking but also keep my love for fashion alive!
