A science-based emissions target is an emission reduction target set in line with the Paris Agreement’s ambitions, and a Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) approval is an acknowledgement that the target is in line with the 1.5C amibition and is set according to best practice.

The SBTi framework is based on two target types: near-term and long-term:

  • A near-term target is focused on the current climate efforts and decarbonization in the short-term, with a 5-10 year timeframe.
  • A long-term target is focused on complete decarbonization and reaching net-zero. By setting a long-term net-zero target, a company commits to reducing its emissions to as close as zero as possible – usually between 5% and 10% of base year emissions, depending on the sector – and to removing GHGs from the atmosphere equivalent to their remaining residual emissions.

We can assist you through the entire SBTi process, including ensuring your GHG inventory is up to SBTi’s standard, determining your ambition level, identifing emissions reduction measures, filling out the application, and following up your climate work after approval.
