As 2022 comes to a close, I would like to offer my reflections on the past year, and look ahead to the transformative possibilities and opportunities that 2023 could bring.
Through working closely with business leaders around the world, I understand and have experienced challenges during 2022 that I am sure many of you will have also felt – whether it be the continuing economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic, the knock-on effects on the global supply chain, or the implications of ongoing geopolitical tensions.
With necessity being the mother of invention, as often happens in difficult circumstances, middle market businesses and RSM teams around the world have done what they do best – innovate and transform to meet changing market conditions. Throughout the year, I have seen demonstrations of agility and resilience, a drive to adopt and develop new technologies, and increased recognition for the importance of collaborative working. Each of these attributes will undoubtably be critical to continue and build upon as we move into 2023.
As we look ahead, the war for talent and new skills, the application of AI and automation, increased regulation and legislation, and economic and trade restrictions, will continue to each affect businesses around the world. Due to the interconnectedness of the global economy, there are likely few places or industries these developments will not reach, and their impact is only likely to increase.
Understanding this, it is clear that the environment that we are working in is transformative in nature. Change is happening at a quickening pace across all areas of business – whether purposeful or reactive – and it goes without saying that in a transformative environment, businesses themselves need to transform in order to remain relevant and successful. In 2023, incremental change will not be enough – neither for RSM nor our clients.
In recognition of all of this, taking all that we have learned from the markets and clients we serve, and our own personal experiences, RSM has developed a new and transformative global strategy that will be launched in January 2023. At its core, our new strategy is built around meeting and exceeding the changing needs and expectations of our clients and our people – through investing and applying new technologies, looking at new and modern ways to provide business solutions, and using data to create personalised and forward-looking experiences. I can’t wait to get started.
As business leaders, despite all we face, I believe we can look to the future with both confidence and excitement. Change brings opportunity, and I, like all my colleagues throughout RSM, are ready to rise to the challenge in 2023 and beyond – ready to support businesses around the world in making confident decisions about their own transformation as we drive our own.
