Guest post from Robert Coles, RSM Europe Regional Leader
As European regional leader for RSM, I was excited to see the announcement of the 709 companies from across Europe that have been awarded “National Champion” status, as part of the first round of the 2014/15 European Business Awards. The awards programme, which are well known for championing innovation, excellence and entrepreneurship across Europe, has broken previous records this year, engaging with over 24,000 businesses from 33 countries.
I am struck by the varying size of companies entered. It is great to see the likes of BMW Germany in the same category as Monkey Tie, the French start-up, Retail World of Greece and the boutique Hotel 41 in the United Kingdom, all in the Award for Customer Focus – it makes for great competition. Just as we always have been keen to see smaller businesses awarded for their excellence, I am pleased to see European giants such as Carlsberg, British Airways and Fiat also being rewarded for their outstanding performance.
At RSM we know that whether a company has a headcount of 5, 50 or 50,000, many of the business challenges remain the same and that the skills, ambition, grit and acumen needed to start and build a business are those very attributes which help it to succeed. As Mark Twain said, “it's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog.”
And, on that note, I want to wish all of our National Champions in Europe the best of luck as they go on into the next stage of the awards.
