Internship is the Closest You Get to Practical Experience in Your Education

This is what Jørgen, Marius, Gina, and Andrea experienced in January when they were interns at RSM Norway.

-    “It seemed exciting to get an insight into the industry during a normal work month, and a four-week internship in January also fit perfectly alongside my studies,” says Andrea.

Up Close

The students get to participate in real work tasks and experience typical work weeks at the start of the year. For the audit interns, this also meant the beginning of the annual financial statement process.

-    “To a large extent, we have been involved in auditing. We have had the opportunity to go out to clients and work with a team there. There has also been quite a bit of ARO (shareholder register statement), and we have helped wherever needed,” says Jørgen.

Marius explains that he has been involved in auditing from A to Z.

-    “I have, among other things, worked on planning, visited clients, conducted inventory counts, contributed to audit, and prepared annual financial statements and tax papers. Additionally, I have been responsible for smaller clients and gone through the entire audit process, with good help from the others at the office.

-    “Now that I'm going back to the study hall, my experiences will primarily contribute to a better understanding of the practical work involved in auditing,” continues Gina.

-    “It will probably also give me some extra motivation knowing that the daily life awaiting me as a new graduate will be varied and enjoyable – even though it will also involve hard work.”

Gina had the oppurtunity to work with clients early on.

Social Aspects

The interns are considered full-fledged employees during their time at RSM, participating in both social and after-work activities. “I have greatly enjoyed the football on Mondays and the pleasant atmosphere during Friday drinks,” says Jørgen. Andrea and Gina agree that Friday drinks and the fitness training sessions in Oslo have been some of the highlights aside from the professional aspects. Marius has also appreciated the Padel training sessions in Forus.

Jørgen got to enjoy the social aspects at RSM.

Andrea joined RSM Oslo weekly work outs.

Mutual Benefits

It's not just the students who benefit greatly from the internship; it's an excellent opportunity for us as well, says Krister Aanesen, CEO of RSM Norway.

- We receive fresh knowledge straight from the classroom, new perspectives, and they supplement us with good digital understanding, The students are the future workforce, and it is incredibly important for us to stay updated on and interested in what the students are concerned with.

Jørgen leaves with increased confidence and a sense of accomplishment.
- I am more confident about what I want to do after my studies and have felt that I am ready to handle working life – and I know it will be fine!
- I have gained a good insight into what it's like to work at RSM and experienced the great environment. Professionally, I have learned a lot about how transactions work and what can affect the price of a company. I have also learned some new programs and smart Excel functions that will be frequently used as a student, says Andrea.

A Perfect Match!

An internship is a great way to see if you want to work both in the industry and the company. It acts like a very long job interview for both parties. RSM Norway is proud and happy to announce that all four have signed full-time contracts and will start as Associates when they finish their studies in 2025.

Jørgen doesn't hesitate when asked if he has any tips for those considering applying for an internship in 2025.

- First and foremost, I recommend just going for it. I would say that you experience a greater sense of accomplishment in the internship where you actually see what you have learned through your studies, can put it into practice, and deliver a final product. If you're curious, contact people at stands, career days, and company presentations, and ask questions. My experience is that everyone just finds it fun to talk to the students.

- Apply! The learning curve is incredibly steep, and you learn a lot in a short time here that is extremely valuable, concludes Andrea.
