Completing your training contract at with a medium sized firm as an alternative to the "Big 4"

When deciding where you should work and who you should sign your training contract (also known as articles) with, a number of factors need to be considered:

  • The type of environment that you will be working in - will you receive personal attention?
  • Level of exposure and opportunities to various service lines in the firm
  • Opportunities for secondments and travel overseas
  • Specific training programmes to ensure trainee accountants are mentored and given the opportunity to develop into highly skilled qualified Chartered Accountants and Auditors
  • Experience in more than one specific industry to ensure  a well rounded range of experience
  • The client base of the firm and nature of the work that will be expected of you throughout the training contract, amongst others.

RSM fall into the category of medium sized firms. Our TIPP (Training in Public Practice) training contract has a focus on mentoring and development. This ensures that each trainee accountant receives personal attention and guidance  during their journey to becoming a CA(SA). Each trainee accountant will get one-on-one and on-the-job training from competent mentors, as well as receive constructive feedback after each task is completed thus being evaluated and recognised for the work that you perform. All our Directors have an open door policy and are always happy to offer assistance when required.

During the course of the training contract each trainee is exposed to various areas of expertise to ensure that you meet the minimum requirements set by the South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (“SAICA”). At a medium sized firm like RSM, this exposure is met and exceeded through our various service offerings. A trainee accountant at our firm will have exposure to not just industry specific statutory audits but also corporate and individual taxation, data analytics, trusts, corporate statutory services, preparation of fully compliant financial statements, accounting services and internal audit, amongst others. This is one of the main benefits of completing your training contract at a medium sized firm where you are able to obtain extensive and varied experience that will help you to become a well-rounded Chartered Accountant.

As a member of the RSM International network, the sixth largest network of assurance, tax and consulting firms, trainee accountants are exposed to internationally active clients and have the opportunity to be seconded to various countries around the world. This allows trainee accountants to travel and interact with like minded individuals across the globe and obtain international experience.

RSM produces nothing short of the most highly skilled Chartered Accountants and Auditors. On completion of your training contract you have the opportunity to stay on with the firm in the audit environment as qualified auditors, move into specialised service offerings within the organisation or proceed into commerce, locally or abroad, with an excellent, well-rounded skill set that can be applied to almost any environment.
