Breaking news!
The Australian Federal Government has advised the introduction of a new dairy tariff dubbed "the cheese tax."

Under the new law, all activities where cheese may be involved will be subject to an additional levy that must be paid with a variety of cheese. The new tax comes into effect on 1 April, 2023 - and attempts to dodge the tax could get ugly.

A spokesperson from RSM Australia, self-proclaimed Cheese Tax Specialist, Toki the Mini Dachshund, commented,

The rules are the rules. You feta pay up." He went on to confirm that this was a serious matter and not an attempt by dachshund tax collectors to gain additional snacks.

This new tax may be an effort to boost revenue as well as address what some have described as a fromage fixation, encouraging taxpayers to visit their fridge less often to avoid having to dole out a slice of brie every time they open the cheese drawer.

Not all cheese is equal under the new tax - specialty fromage like gouda will be worth more than more commonplace cheeses such as parmesan or cheddar. The government will be releasing a chart with the proper weights of each type of cheese once the tax has been put into effect.

Like any new tax, the cheese tax has attracted opponents. Outspoken cheese enthusiasts are taking to social media to vent their frustrations, with comments such as

What is this cheese tax nonsense? Do they really expect us to put aside some cheddar or parmesan every time we want a snack? Tell 'em they're dreamin'!

However, the government is standing firm on the new tax, confirming that they do, in fact, expect every Australian to abide by the new rules.

Toki the Mini Dachshund advised residents to stock up on their favourite cheese before the new tax hits. However, it might brie a case of too little, too late.
