Effective April 2022, the RMAT will become part of a new Regulatory Framework for the State Records Act 1998 (the Act).

In accordance with this, all public offices will be required to submit their RMAT results as part of an updated compliance regime conducted by The State Archives and Records Authority (SARA).
The questions in the self-assessment tool are focused on the management of records, information, and data in NSW public offices, and how these practices align with the requirements of the Act. They highlight the links between records management and requirements for cyber security, privacy, data sharing, open data, and information access (GIPAA). They are designed to assist:

Public OfficesSARA
  • Self-assess and report their alignment with the regulatory framework (the State Records Act 1998 and associated standards); and
  • Have an overview of regulatory alignment across the sector; and
  • Identify areas for improvement, and possibly support a business case.
  • Identify trends or key issues for targeted intervention, to support planning and the allocation of resources.

What happens to the RMAT?

The RMAT results are recorded, weighted, and applied to provide an organisational maturity level out of 5. A score of 3 is defined within the RMAT “Baseline Compliance”, which meets SARA’s requirements for high-risk/high-value records and information. Public offices can use the results of the assessment for reporting on the current status of their information governance programs; planning for improvement in a particular business unit or information system; justifying investment and measuring progress.
The benefit of conducting a “dry-run” assessment will enable organisations to be prepared for the mandated RMAT when it comes into force in late April, giving you valuable insight into areas of improvement and how to implement them.
