The program supports pilot and demonstration projects that accelerate the research, development and demonstration of novel and emerging carbon management technologies. Funding targets projects that capture, utilise or remove carbon dioxide.
Eligible technologies include, but are not limited to:
- Innovative carbon capture and/or utilisation for hard-to-abate sectors; and
- Novel or emerging carbon removal technologies such as:
- Direct air capture
- Enhanced rock weathering
- Biomass carbon removal and storage (incl. durable sequestration in biochar)
- Mineral carbonation technology (e.g. capture carbon in building and other materials).
Conventional and land‑based approaches that leverage natural biological systems without techn logical intervention (e.g. afforestation / reforestation, peatland or wetland restoration and agroforestry) are not eligible.
Grant funding of up to $10 million is available. The total funding pool is $32.6 million.
Funding is available on a 1:1 contribution basis.
Eligible applicants must hold an ABN, be registered for GST and be one of the following:
- An incorporated Australia entity;
- An incorporated trustee on behalf of a trust;
- An Australia state or territory Government agency or body; and
- A corporate Commonwealth entity.
Eligible projects must:
- Be located in Australia;
- Not solely be a feasibility or engineering study;
- Have at least $2 million in eligible expenditure; and
- Be completed by 31 March 2031.
