The Federal Government recently announced $500 million in funding support for green iron production

For the purposes of this fund, green iron defined as concentrated iron metal made from a reduction of Australian iron ore using a lower emissions reducing agents. Examples of lower emissions technologies include renewable hydrogen, renewable energy or natural gas, where there is a pathway to renewable alternatives. For clarity, this funding targets green iron production facilities that leverage lower emissions technologies. It is not suited to standalone lower emission technology projects where the power is to be used for other purposes.

 

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 

The program provides at least $500 million in funding to support projects across Australia that advance commercial-scale green iron production. Funding is available for both existing facilities and greenfield projects that aim to accelerate and add value to Australia’s iron ore industry.

Program objectives include:

  • De-risking early capital investments in green iron production
  • Attracting private investment to build a strong green iron industry
  • Creating jobs, economic benefits and industry spill overs
  • Delivering community benefits aligned with the Future Made in Australia
  • Community Benefit Principles, including secure jobs, inclusive workforce development, First Nations engagement, strong local industry and transparent tax compliance.

Intended outcomes:

  • Transforming national, regional and local economies through green iron production and related industrial capabilities
  • Reducing emissions across the steel value chain in line with global and domestic decarbonisation goals.

A minimum funding pool of $500 million is available. The grant amount will cover up to 25% of eligible project expenditure.

Co-contributions can be stackable with other government funding. However, no more than 65% of the total eligible project expenditure can be Commonwealth, state, territory or local government grants (including this grant).

Applicants must have an ABN, be registered for GST and be one of the following:

  • Entity incorporated in Australia
  • Company limited guarantee
  • Incorporated trustee on behalf of a trust

Consortium applications are welcome.

Eligible projects must focus on capital works to establish a commercial-scale green iron facility in Australia and be completed by 31 March 2031.
