For our latest chat, Steve Healey opted to swap the coffee for a glass of newly released Vermentino during his catch up with Ewen Macpherson, Owner and Co-founder of Symphony Hill Wines.

Situated in the Granite Belt region, Ewen and his wife Elissa, founded the winery along with Ewen’s parents Bob and Jill Macpherson, in 1996. As a computer programmer running a successful business for over a decade, Ewen was looking for something different in his career, something away from the city life in Brisbane. Ewen recalls “I had grown up on acreage on the Sunshine Coast and absolutely loved that childhood experience. My first son was newly born and I had grown to find city life too crowded and restricting. I need space around me and wanted my kids to experience country life like I did…”

Ewen’s story is an absolutely fascinating one, in particular when he talks about the long-term patience required to run a successful winery, and the range of challenges faced, as well as opportunities presented along the way.

Coffee Conversations is a series of short videos, hosted by Steve Healey – Partner, RSM Australia, and involve an informal coffee chat to gain a better understanding of who Steve’s guest is, and more about their background (both personally and professionally). The series is aimed at providing an insight into some of the challenges and opportunities encountered in business, the approach taken, and the ‘silver lining’ identified along the way.
