The Federal Government has recently released Round 1 of the Community Energy Upgrades Fund. It provides funding for local governments across Australia to support investments and upgrades that improve the energy efficiency of their owned and/or operated facilities.

What's it for?

The program’s objective is to support the Government’s broader efforts to reduce emissions and improve energy performance, contributing to Australia meeting its emission reduction targets.

Funding is available for local governments to improve their facilities’ energy efficiency, lowering greenhouse gas emissions and reducing energy bills. 
Eligible expenditure includes one or more of the following:

  • load flexibility / demand management systems;
  • electrification upgrades;
  • electric vehicle charging infrastructure;
  • energy efficiency upgrades; and 
  • behind the meter renewables generation and storage.

How much is available?    

Grants between $25,000 and $2.5 million are available, with matched contributions required from the applicant. The total funding pool for this round is $50 million.

Who can apply?

Local governments across Australia. 

Funding is open to individual local government bodies for their owned and / or operated facilities. Groups of local governments, including through existing joint organisations of councils can also apply.
