Why AI adoption can never be ‘set and forget’

A manufacturing business was experiencing significant growth, and the managing director was invested in ensuring the organisation was prepared for future growth.

This required more timely finance and operational insights with confidence the data was accurate.

The business was forward-thinking and successful, but many core processes were still manual. Data was fragmented across systems, and the business was yet to fully leverage cloud technology and automation.

As a result, leadership could see the potential of streamlining and ensuring data integrity, even prior to the AI boom, but weren’t able to capitalise on real time decisions or planning in any real depth. Lack of time also meant they had little capacity to step back and redesign how the business worked.

After being engaged to undertake a finance and digital review, RSM’s digital services team did not focus immediately on AI. Instead, we looked for opportunities to:

1 - Simplify processes

2 - Improve system integration

3 - Enhance data quality and integrity

4 - Introduce automation across routine activities

5 - Build a data analytics reporting solution for operational and financial reporting.

By establishing stronger foundations, the team was able to save more than 12 hours per week within a key role which freed up valuable time for strategic planning and decision making. Importantly, the organisation now has the clean data, connected systems and scalable processes needed to support future AI initiatives.

This case study is featured in our thinkBIG report, Cutting through the AI hype: A practical guide to AI for SMEs.
