The WA Government's $50 million Local Battery Manufacturing Program is focused on supporting increased local manufacturing of batteries and battery components for residential, industrial and commercial applications.

The Program supports manufacturing or assembly of battery cells, modules and packs.  Battery recycling is also an eligible activity.  The Program is currently battery-chemistry agnostic although future streams may have a chemistry-specific focus.

Grant funding is immediately available across two streams:

  • Production-Ready Stream supports pre-production activities including selected late-stage feasibility studies, prototype development and testing and accreditation.
  • Production Scale-Up Stream supports projects that scale-up battery manufacturing operations including capital equipment, training, new or upgraded premises or engaging business or manufacturing expertise.

A low-interest loan scheme is also planned in the future although no specific timings have been released.

Production-Ready Stream – grants of up to $100,000 from an indicative pool of $2.2 million

Production Scale-Up Stream – grants of up to $5 million from an indicative pool of $25 million

Both streams require matched funding by applicants with grants to cover up to 50% of eligible project costs.

Subject to the availability of funds, both streams will run until the end of FY29.

Eligible applicants must:

  • Have at least 12 months trading history
  • Provide evidence of a physical presence including FTE in WA
  • Be at least 50% Australian-owned (Production Scale-Up Stream only).

Businesses seeking to relocate all or part of their operations will be considered under certain conditions.

Business must commit to operating in WA for at least three years.

Applications for the Production-Ready Stream close 30 January 2026.
Applications for the Production Scale-Up Stream close 20 March 2026.
