Shaun La Motte
Director - Melbourne

Shaun La Motte is a Director at RSM Australia who specialises in Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs) and strategic advisory for high-net-worth individuals, middle market SMEs, and business owners.

Shaun’s focus is on helping clients structure, protect, and grow their wealth through effective SMSF management and tailored estate planning strategies.

His advice is grounded in deep technical knowledge, a commercial mindset, and a passion for making complex matters easy to understand. Clients value his ability to translate intricate superannuation rules into practical strategies that support their financial goals and provide peace of mind.

“I’m passionate about simplifying complex superannuation and estate planning strategies so clients can make confident, informed decisions about their future.”

Shaun has worked with a wide range of clients to help them navigate the complexities of Australia’s superannuation and taxation system. From establishing and managing Self-Managed Superannuation Funds (SMSFs) and associated structures to implementing succession planning and wealth transfer strategies, he provides guidance that is both strategic and personal.

A key part of Shaun’s role involves helping clients understand the potential impact of legislative changes on their retirement savings and estate plans. By proactively interpreting proposed amendments and advising on their implications, he helps clients stay ahead of change, ensuring their structures remain compliant, flexible, and aligned with their long-term financial planning objectives.

Shaun also presents regularly at industry forums and professional associations across Australia, sharing his expertise on SMSF technical issues, taxation implications, and associated estate planning considerations. His presentations are well-regarded for being both informative and engaging, reflecting his commitment to educating clients and peers alike.

At the heart of Shaun’s work is a commitment to clarity, communication, and client empowerment. He understands that superannuation and estate planning can be daunting areas for many individuals, especially when managing complex investment structures or multi-generational wealth.

Shaun takes the time to actively listen to his clients and their management teams, ensuring he fully understands their circumstances before recommending solutions. He explains technical matters in plain language, helping clients make informed decisions that align with their business plan, strategic goals, and family values.

Whether advising a SME on succession planning, assisting a high-net-worth individual with estate structuring, or guiding trustees through SMSF compliance and reporting requirements, Shaun provides a hands-on, practical approach that focuses on achieving positive, long-term outcomes.

Before joining RSM, Shaun held several senior leadership roles across major accounting and advisory firms in Australia. He spent over eight years as a Senior Manager at a Big 4 firm, followed by more than 13 years as a Director at another mid-tier firm, where he led national initiatives in SMSF and wealth advisory.

Most recently, Shaun served as CEO and Head of Advice and Strategy at a superannuation company, where he was responsible for overseeing advice quality, compliance, and strategic direction.

Shaun has also led a significant project involving an offshore operations review in India, conducting detailed due diligence on technology, data protection, staffing capability, and operational risk. His comprehensive report provided the foundation for enhanced governance and long-term business efficiency.

This blend of technical expertise, operational leadership, and commercial insight enables Shaun to deliver advice that is both strategic and practical — balancing compliance with opportunity.

Shaun believes that the best professional relationships are built on trust, respect, and open dialogue. His clients appreciate his approachable nature, his ability to simplify complex financial topics, and his genuine interest in helping them achieve security for the future.

He often remarks that his role is as much about education as it is about strategy, guiding clients to understand their superannuation structures, investment options, and estate plans so they can make confident, informed decisions.

What motivates Shaun most is seeing clients gain clarity and control over their financial future. Whether it’s helping families plan for intergenerational wealth transfer or ensuring an SMSF is structured for tax efficiency and compliance, Shaun is driven by the opportunity to make a meaningful impact.

Outside of work, Shaun is a passionate golfer, though he admits his game might have more in common with John Daly’s off-course energy than his on-course skill. He’s also a keen Richmond supporter and enjoys spending his weekends with his Family, at the footy (local or AFL) or on the fairway.

Shaun’s easy-going personality and sense of humour make him a natural communicator, both with clients and colleagues. Whether he’s discussing investment strategies or sharing a laugh on the golf course, Shaun brings energy, empathy, and authenticity to everything he does.
