Nathan Burgess is a Director in our Restructuring & Recovery Division in Brisbane.

Nathan specialises in personal insolvency, liquidation, voluntary administration, and corporate insolvency. He works with businesses and individuals experiencing financial distress, providing practical solutions to help navigate complex financial and operational challenges. His expertise includes assessing solvency, implementing restructuring strategies, and managing formal insolvency appointments with a focus on preserving value and achieving the best possible outcomes for stakeholders.

One of the most significant engagements in Nathan’s career involved trading a fish farming business through an external administration process. Rather than pursuing a straightforward shutdown or asset sale, he was part of a team that successfully continued trading the business while marketing it as a going concern. This required quickly developing an understanding of the operational, biological, and regulatory aspects of the aquaculture industry, managing livestock risks, and maintaining critical supply relationships to preserve the value of the business throughout the process.

Nathan works primarily with middle market SMEs and high net worth individuals. He helps clients navigate periods of financial distress, uncertainty, and complexity, particularly where there are competing stakeholder interests, regulatory pressures, or concerns around potential misconduct. His work includes stabilising underperforming businesses, assessing financial viability, implementing restructuring strategies, and managing formal insolvency processes designed to protect and preserve value.

Prior to joining RSM in 2018, Nathan worked for a Brisbane-based boutique insolvency firm, where he developed his expertise in insolvency and restructuring matters. Since joining RSM, he has continued to build on this experience, assisting clients through a wide range of complex insolvency and turnaround situations.

Throughout his career, Nathan has made a meaningful difference for many individuals and businesses facing difficult circumstances. In one particularly rewarding matter, he assisted a client facing bankruptcy who was dealing with complex financial affairs, historical tax issues, and uncertainty around asset ownership. Through a careful review and resolution process, he helped achieve an outcome that allowed the family to retain their home, providing both financial stability and peace of mind during a challenging period.

Nathan enjoys the variety and problem-solving aspects of his role, recognising that no two engagements are ever the same. He values the opportunity to work through complex situations that require different commercial and strategic approaches, whether stabilising a distressed business, investigating financial affairs, or managing competing stakeholder interests. He finds it particularly rewarding to see the tangible impact of his work, whether through preserving value within a business or helping individuals move forward with greater certainty and confidence.
